How did our town “Qurum” gots its name?

Narjeel Restaurant is located near the Qurum Natural Park area. Qurum is close by the beach. There is a significant swamp area of mangrove trees where the land meets the Oman Sea. Qurum is an Arabic name for mangrove tree, and that is how the place got its name! Qurum trees can tolerate salty water and flourish in saline coastal habitats. In areas where mangrove tree roots are permanently submerged, they host and attract many organisms include algae, oysters, and sponges. Shrimps and mud lobsters use the muddy bottom as their home. So if you like ventures and excitement, try to spend one of your weekends early mornings while the sun is not so hot nearby the area and you will experience the nature close by you right here in Muscat. Just be aware not to get inside the conservation area as you will need a permit. Do not forget to take with you a bucket just in case you get lucky and catch some crabs and lobster. One more thing to take with you, a binocular so you can enjoy watching those permanent residents Herons birds.

It has been the practice in the united state to recognize the month of April as a Stress Awareness Month. It is useful to remind each others about how unhealthy it is to be stressful and what causes us to be stressful and what are the cures for stress as it seems. Stress has become the modern day epidemic. Meditation is an effective and efficient remedy for a busy and overworked mind. Which is why meditation is the greatest gift you could give to yourself. You do not know how to meditate? it is so simple, it is about how to be aware and present in this very moment. Try it today. Here is a simple and effective practice that can be done anywhere and at any time of day. Practice for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, or longer. Sit comfortably with your back straight. Take a deep breath and let it go. Eyes are closed, breathe normally. Begin to silently count at the end of each out breath, count to five, then start at one again. Just five breaths and back to one. Simply follow each breath and silently count. So simple! The 5 time Prayer time is a free way to get the same results. Saturday Night

This Saturday evening was not a typical one, it was nice to see some of our customers dining with us to observe the Earth hour at Narjeel. With lights off for one hour and candles lit, one could not feel other than tranquility and sense of community belonging. thank you our customers and hope to see others on the occasion next year.

What i can do on the earth hour?!

Just in case you are not going to join us on Saturday the 27th Match 8:30 PM to observe the earth hour, here are few things you can do in the one hour Darkness:
Go star gazing: go to the top roof and observe those starts, you will be surprised how inspiring they are to watch. You do not have to imagine like Simba, Pumba and Timon, just watch and you will realize how vast the cosmic is and how insignificant our planet earth is.
Take a moonlit walk: As the full moon is approaching, Qurum or alGhubra beach is a nice place to try or even nearby your neighborhood, it will feel relaxing. Do not postponed it as the summer is approaching!

Meditate: An hour of darkness is a great opportunity to tune out the rest of the world and go within, try to find a comfortable space in your home and spend some time in meditation.
Try a simple dinner by candlelight: Prepare the food in advance, or go with simple finger food. do not forget to serve chocolates for dessert!

Environment Society of Oman ESO has for some times now launched its ambitious campaign to let the citizen and residence of Oman more aware of how harmful plastic bags could be to the environment. Major supermarkets received training for its staff, and nicely design environment friendly for shoppers to they them out. http://www.environment.org.om

Tom Yum is Yum

Tom Yum is a soup originating from Thailand. It is one of the most famous dishes in Thai cuisine. It is widely served in neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. Tom yum is characterized by its distinct hot and sour flavors, with fragrant herbs generously used. The basic soup is made of stock and fresh ingredients such as lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, shallots, lime juice, fish sauce, tamarind, and crushed chili peppers. When the ingredients include prawns, Thai people will call it Tom Yum Koong, and with chicken it will be called Tom Yum Kai, tom yum pla if fish was used, or tom yum talay if mixed seafood is used. The soup is often topped with generous sprinkling of fresh chopped coriander. Other veriety of this famous soup is the tom yum nam kkon when coconut milk is added to the soup. This is not to be confused with tom kha or tom kha gai – where the galanga flavor dominates the soup. Tom yum nam khon is almost always made with prawns, whereas chicken is often used in tom kha. We at Narjeel Restaurant, Tom Yum soup is served in a freshly cut coconut shell that is shipped from Salalah giving the soup its yum yum flavor for our guests to enjoy.

Galangal Roots

The Galangal is a plant with culinary and medicinal uses. It used in various oriental cuisines (for example it is an important ingredient in Thai cuisine and goes into preparing Tom Yum soups, and throughout Indonesian cuisine, for example, in Nasi Goreng). Though it resembles the ginger that it is related to, there is little similarity in taste. In its raw form, galangal has a citrus, earthy aroma. Here in Oman, it is available in the big supermarkets as a whole root, or cut or powdered. The whole fresh root is very hard, and requires both a sharp knife and care to slice. A mixture of galangal and lime juice is used as a tonic in parts of Southeast Asia. It is said to have the effect of an aphrodisiac, and act as a stimulant. Famous herbalist used galangal to treat everything from deafness and heart disease to indigestion. During the 13th-14th centuries, galangal was used by the Turkic peoples (who occupied much of present-day Russia) as a tea, and by the Arabs as a stimulant for their horses. The word galangal, or its variant galanga is used as a common name for all members of the genus Alpinia, and in common usage can refer to four plants, all in the ginger family.
